3D Printed Part Finishing

Review finishing options for metal and polymer 3D printed parts with Inovatec. We help you assess equipment, media, process compounds, cleaning and drying against your part geometry and target finish. Representative samples are the basis for checking a proposed process before production.

Inovatec supplies surface finishing equipment and consumables for mass finishing. For 3D printed parts, we review the material, geometry and required finish before recommending a process. The aim is to identify equipment and consumables suited to your parts, production volume and budget.

Finishing Equipment for 3D Printed Parts

Choosing equipment for your printed parts

Start with the part rather than the machine. Tell us the printing method, material, dimensions, wall thickness, batch quantity and required finish. We can then review suitable mass finishing equipment, finishing media and process compounds. Thin sections, delicate features, holes and internal passages need particular attention. Sample processing helps establish whether a proposed method can reach the required surfaces without unacceptable damage or dimensional change.

Finishing Media and Compounds

Selecting tumbling media and process compounds

Media selection depends on the workpiece material, starting surface and finishing objective. Options include ceramic media for abrasive finishing, porcelain media for suitable polishing applications, and plastic media for applications requiring a different abrasive action. The media shape and size must also suit the part geometry. Check for lodging in holes and slots, access to the surfaces that need treatment, and compatibility between the compound and workpiece material. The final combination should be confirmed on representative samples.

Cleaning and Drying

Rinsing and drying after finishing

Cleaning and drying are part of the process review. The chosen method should remove finishing residue and suit the part material, shape and downstream use. Parts with recesses or internal passages may need additional attention during rinsing and drying. Corrosion-sensitive metals also require a suitable handling and protection plan. Review these steps alongside the finishing operation rather than treating them as separate afterthoughts.

The images on this page illustrate printed parts and surface finishing equipment. They are a starting point for discussion; they do not establish a validated process or a guaranteed result for your part.

Metal and polymer prints require separate process reviews. Differences in material, printing method and geometry can change how a part responds to mechanical finishing. A process selected for one printed part should be checked again before it is applied to another.

Agree on acceptance criteria before evaluating samples. These may include the visual finish, edge condition, surface roughness where specified, and any dimensions or features that must be protected. Assess results against the drawing and a reference finish rather than photographs alone.

A practical process review for 3D printed parts

Inovatec helps you review equipment, media and process steps for the required surface finish. Recommendations depend on the parts and the agreed production requirements.

Potential finishing steps include deburring, surface smoothing, polishing, cleaning and drying. The appropriate sequence depends on the starting condition and intended use of the part. Contact us with your part details, drawing and target finish so we can review the application and discuss sample processing.

Surface Finish and Dimensional Requirements

Finishing metal and polymer parts

Mechanical finishing removes material and can affect edges, dimensions and delicate features. Do not assume that a smoother surface leaves the original geometry unchanged. For metal or polymer prints, identify the surfaces that need treatment and the areas that must remain within tolerance. Sample evaluation is especially important for thin walls, intricate features and parts that must fit or seal against another component.

Define the finish required for the next production step, whether that is a smoother handling surface, a specified edge condition or preparation for a later operation. Confirm what is achievable for the actual part before selecting production equipment.

Sample Processing and Consulting

Sample processing and technical consulting

Prospective customers can provide representative parts and a sample or specification of the desired finish. Initial sample processing is offered free of charge at our process technology center. Detailed process information, including the machine, media and compounds used, is provided with an equipment purchase or through a separately agreed paid service. Any applicable service charges are collected before the finishing work begins. Technical consulting can also be arranged during product development.

If you already own mass finishing equipment, consulting is priced according to the project. We provide a cost estimate before the work is agreed. Please supply parts for the trial and a reference sample or specification of the required finish so that the scope and acceptance criteria can be defined.

Equipment purchases include technical consulting at no charge for one year from the delivery date. This support covers the original surface finish specifications agreed before the purchase. Changes to the part, material or required finish need a separate review of the consulting scope.

Request Initial Sample Processing

Contact us to discuss initial sample processing and confirm the parts and reference information to send.

Please include the printing method, material, part dimensions and weight, batch quantity, required throughput, target finish and any critical tolerances. Drawings, photographs and a reference sample help us assess the application. Share your production budget and automation requirements where available.

Free sample process service

Once the application has been reviewed, we can discuss suitable equipment, consumables, cleaning and drying steps, and any further trials required. Confirm the process scope and sample results before making a production decision.
