Gear Polishing – Definitive Guide

1.  How Do You Optimize Vibratory Performance During Gear Polishing?

Improving the efficiency of vibratory machines in the gear polishing process is key and essential to achieving a satisfactory work-piece finishing. Here are some of the techniques to look into:

1.1 Media Volume in Vibratory Bowl

In the vibratory gear polishing process, the use of tumbling media is essential.

It helps to achieve and maintain a consistent and quality surface finishing on gears.

It is, therefore, essential to take cognizance of the volume of media in the vibratory bowl before initiating a cycle.

ceramic media volume

As a general rule, media volume in a vibratory bowl must always be two (2) inches below the outer diameter of the bowl’s rim.

At no point should your vibratory finishing machine run with a media mass that is below standard specifications.

Fewer media may result in process inefficiencies.

1.2 Choice of Vibratory Media

The choice of media (as per size, shape, abrasiveness, density, etc.) is an important factor for any mass finishing operation.

In this case, the abrasiveness of the media is a key ingredient in optimizing the performance of your vibratory machine.

Figure 2. Choice of Media

In general, not so abrasive media is advisable; while for isotropic finishing, the choice of media has to be non-abrasive and of high density.

The lesser abrasive the media, the lower the degraded media deposits obtained at drains, and the lower the attrition rate of the media.

In other words, a less abrasive media retains its shape and size for much longer than a more abrasive media.

The form retention factor of the media becomes advantageous in applications where contact is essential for specific locations on the gear part.

1.3 Utilization of Sound Covers

When sound reduction is desired, sound covers are the best option.

It is imperative to note that sound covers inhibit the dissipation of heat when in place.

Figure 3. Vibratory Finisher with Sound Cover

When covers are used, it is essential to increase the flow rate of liquid into the process to replace fluid loss by evaporation.

1.4 Regulate Motor Speed, Reduce Impingement

During a processing cycle, vibratory finishers with ramped-bottom bowls separate parts and unload them at the end of each cycle.

However, during the unloading phase, the chances of part-on-part contact are high.

Vibratory bowls with a motor inverter or speed potentiometer offer the option to tweak the motor speed.

Maximum allowable motor speed is often rated 60Hz, but during the unloading phase, it’s more advantageous to reduce the speed to 47-50 Hertz.

This action will help minimize part-on-part contact and the likelihood of parts going across media separation decks.

1.5  Ascertain the Integrity of Drains

Compromised drainage and a clogged and wrongly positioned drain tubing can cause liquid leaking around your equipment.

Liquid leaking can compromise the efficiency of your vibratory finishing machine during the gear polishing process.

To ensure the integrity of your machine’s drainage system, take away the content of its vibratory bowl, and cover all holes clean.

To achieve a better fluid drainage mechanism, you could also replace the drain tubing with new ones if needed.

The design of a drain tubing will require that it flows under gravity through its entire span to a sump.

If you observe deviations, ensure to put the tubing configuration in order.

Likewise, long stretch tubing is not uncommon but it’s advisable to make the drains as close to the equipment as practicable.

2. Which Media Is Suitable for the Gear Polishing Process?

In General, we recommend the use of plastic or porcelain media for several types of metal polishing.

More specifically, either plastic or porcelain media is suitable for the gear polishing process.
