RSS ceramic grinding media is produced by mixing porcelain, kaolin,clay, river clay together with brown alumina oxide abrasives. The wet material is formed into desired shape (usually by extrusion and cutting) and then fired to vitrify. Fusion bonding is used to make some media. Such media are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Also, when the engineer selects the proper grade of abrasive, the correct proportion of abrasive to binder, and the most suitable binder, this media will adapt to a great variety of application, and workpieces.

The binder acts as a burnishing surface, and this works against rapid cutting.

What is Cushioning?

If you’ve ever tumbled a batch of freshly polished stones and opened the barrel to find stones with chips and fractures around the edges, listen carefully. This is called bruising and it happens when the stones put in the same container rub against or hit each other with force.

Cushioning is the process of adding media to the barrel other than the stones to prevent them from hitting one another as often. The media also slows down the stones and reduces their impact when they do hit one another.

How to Use Ceramic Tumbling Media?

If you mix ceramic media with stones, separating them with your hands at the endpoint can be very time-consuming. To save time and effort, follow these simple steps to successfully separate media from stones.

Step 1: Dry all the Tumbled Media

This technique works best if the stones and media are dry before entering the classifier. Spread the mixture on a thick towel after tumbling and let it soak the water off the mixture. If you collect small stones this is where you can easily sift through the tumbled stones and media for gems.

Step 2: Place a Classifier Over a Plastic Bucket

Once you’ve set them aside to dry, place a classifier on a plastic bucket. Make sure it is steady and does not flip over when pressurized. Pour in the mix of dried stones and media into the classifier.

Step 3: Shake the Classifier Gently

After emptying all the tumbled stones into the classifier give it a tap or shake it gently to avoid spilling the content on the ground. This allows the media and tiny stones to fall into the bucket. To thoroughly separate the mix, use your hand to softly move the material on the classifier.

Step 4: Media and Tiny Stones are Removed

Softly moving the mixture with your hand pushes through the remaining small stones and ceramic media into the bucket.

And in four simple steps, you have a classifier full of stones and a bucket full of polished media ready for next use.

Materials that Need Cushioning

Two types of materials need ceramic media cushioning, they are:

  1. Materials that Chip or Bruise.
  2. Materials that Cleave.

Materials that bruise or chip easily when they rub against each other include crystalline quartz and glass. Adding ceramic media in the barrel can reduce the extent of this damage.

Fluorite, Topaz, Moonstone, and Amazonite are stones that cleave easily and are very difficult to tumble without splitting. This problem is solved with the help of media cushioning.
